What I’ve Learned as a First-Year Research Assistant

What my experience as a first-year University of ������ý research assistant has been like, and what I’ve learned that could inspire you.

My name is Andrew Pongrátz, and I am a first-year student at U������ý. I'm excited to share the research I am working on with the School of Sociology. 

When I took the with Dr. Brian Mayer, I got the opportunity to interview individuals that had received rental assistance during the later part of the COVID-19 pandemic. This workshop-based course piqued my interest in research and the impact it can have.

As a research assistant for Dr. Mayer and Dr. Erin Heinz, I work with the Pima County Board of Supervisors and the Tucson City Council to advise on new policies to expand economic prosperity across Southern ������ý.

Here's how I got involved in a practical research experience and how it has benefited my academic career so far.

On Becoming a First-Year Research Assistant

When I first started college, I wanted to get hands-on experience with research and an overview of social science research. I signed up for SOC 397A because the course sounded interesting, and I wanted to learn more about poverty in Southern ������ý. I was also drawn to the course due to its applied experiential learning designation, meaning I could go outside the classroom and use my knowledge to support the community.

What I've Learned ������ý Myself Through Research

In the future, I am interested in pursuing a career as a lawyer, and through extensive training in collecting survey data, I have improved my writing and analytical skills. Other technical skills I've gained include using Google Scholar and JSTOR to find valuable sources and explore research already done in the field. 

Much of my time dedicated to research is unstructured, which has taught me about effective time management. I have learned how to create schedules, set calendar due dates, and master project completion. I've also discovered that I enjoy working in a hybrid environment, where I work independently and meet weekly with my mentors and other research assistants in person. 

Why This Type of Research is Important

While I've learned a lot of technical skills, on a deeper level, I have gained a better understanding of poverty-related issues and how poverty affects all people due to its costs to communities and resources. 

As a research assistant, my work applies sociological research techniques to recommend policies and practices for reducing regional poverty. I have had the opportunity to meet tenants, social workers, law enforcement, and others who are connected to housing issues to learn first-hand about their experiences. 

How I Balance My Research With Everything Else in My Life

I will be honest; balancing all my responsibilities is difficult sometimes. When juggling so many different activities, it is essential to ensure you take time to relax and unwind. I go swimming as much as possible. It helps me to relax, readjust, and jump back into all my activities. I enjoy being involved in the community and interacting with many people, but caring for myself is important, so I make time to read and rest. 

My Advice for Wildcats Interested in Research

For Wildcats interested in research and really to all Wildcats, try out a research experience during your studies. Whether taking a class, working one-on-one with a professor, or being part of a research team/lab, conducting research is a very effective way to explore different paths that make sense for you and your goals. There are also so many ways to apply what you learn in your research to other opportunities, like volunteering and presenting at conferences.

When you’re in college, thinking about the future can sometimes feel intimidating. Internships are a great way to bridge the gap between college and the workforce. At the University of ������ý, we make it easy to find all the resources you’ll need to navigate this process.

What is an internship? How do I find one? 

Internships give students a taste of what the professional world is like. They can be paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time, remote or in-person, and you can find one in just about any field you want. 

Students can find internships through their University of ������ý account on or by connecting with (CCR). You can also check out other job sites like LinkedIn or work with professors to find opportunities. 

Before you apply, take some time to work on your résumé. CCR has to help and you can even get personalized feedback. Through , you can also get individualized career coaching for any step of the process, from identifying your goals to preparing for interviews. 

What are the benefits of doing an internship?

Meet Mariella Rodriguez, a public health and Spanish major who has already completed one internship and is finishing her second. Last summer, she did an internship in language interpretation with Maricopa Superior Court in Phoenix. 

Since she wants to work as a court interpreter after college, this internship gave Mariella valuable experience and connections in the field.

“Completing this internship made me sure of what I want to do and that I will enjoy it,” she said.

Now, Mariella is working with Amistades, a local nonprofit organization that serves Latino communities in Pima County. This is her second semester doing this internship, and she has been able to get credit for both Spanish and public health. 

“Interning at Amistades has given me the opportunity to see what kind of jobs are out there and speak to colleagues who have already entered the work environment so they have a lot of advice on how to proceed,” she said. 

What opportunities are there at the University of ������ý? 

The perfect internship for you might be right here on-campus. Eli Burke is the senior program manager of design projects at ������ý and explained this unique program of “mircrointernships” completed through CCR. 

The is a 10-week program that requires students to work 10 hours per week, with a flexible schedule. They are paid internships and priority is given to applicants who have a federal work study award.

“The internships were created this way to offer opportunities to more non-traditional students, or students who wouldn’t typically take advantage of an internship,” Burke said.

CCR partners with different community organizations or businesses that provide a challenge for students to solve over the course of their internship. This means each semester provides a completely different experience, and students are welcome to repeat the program.

“It offers lots of ways to gain experience that’s both transferable skills and specific to your industry,” Burke said.

These internships emphasize the process of design thinking, or problem solving with a human-centered approach. Students in the program get to be creative and work with students of many different disciplines. 

Liz Glenn is a geosciences major who was part of the first class of Design Thinking interns. She now serves as a student mentor for the program. 

“I think internships are the best way to learn what you want to do,” she said. “Do as many as you can while you’re in college. Handshake and CCR are both fantastic resources for seeking out internships.”

A Dream to Graduate College Debt-Free Comes True

College debt is a concern for most of us but is it possible to minimize – even eliminate – what we owe? Here’s how one University of ������ý senior did just that.

Paying for college is as unique as every student – there’s no one way to do it. Erin Sye took classes online from the fifth grade on, before attending Glendale Community College (GCC) and then transferring to the University of ������ý at North Valley – an academic journey different from many. Now, in her senior year, she is preparing to earn another distinction: graduating with zero college debt. Here’s how she did it.

Stacking Financial Aid

How did taking classes locally help minimize the cost of college?

I was able to save quite a bit of money while I attended GCC. Living at home, I didn't need to pay for housing, which also helped. I also didn't have to pay for certain things like parking or food. Plus, I really love being able to live at home and not going all the way to Tucson for classes.

What part did scholarships play in funding your education?

I received a full academic scholarship from GCC, which helped pay for my classes. I also received a tennis scholarship which I put toward books. Doing this allowed me to save the money I made at work for other things that I needed. I also received an honors scholarship near the end of my time at GCC and joined , which helped me get a scholarship at ������ý that pays for more than half of my tuition. 

You mentioned work. How many jobs do you presently hold?

The job I have at a tennis center is my only job. I have been working there for over three years now. Every semester, I also get a stipend for ASUANY (The Associated Students of the University of ������ý Near You, where Erin serves as the administrative assistant, is a branch of student government representing distance and online students). I pay for the rest of my classes that my academic scholarship doesn't cover with this money.

Advice for Wildcats Wanting to Minimize College Debt

Seemingly small decisions can lead to big savings.

I think books also play a huge factor in being debt-free. Books can get expensive, so I search for the cheapest ones I can find. The library is a great tool, and I use it if they have my books. If they don't, I usually rent, which is a lot better than purchasing a book that I probably won't use ever again.

Consider starting at a community college.

I think a lot of people look down on community college, but it is a great place to start. I was still able to receive the college experience without going into a lot of debt. I also think there are that people don't necessarily know are there. I was able to receive money for playing tennis, and not many people knew about the scholarship. Taking opportunities that could result in a scholarship is a great idea.

Is the Honors College harder?

You get more, but you also have to do a little bit more. To be an Honors student, you need to take 30 (transfer students may take less, depending on credits), which include a few Honors GenEds and the . That leaves dozens of Honors credits that you get to choose – or even design. What are Honors classes? Honors classes are similar to non-Honors classes, but tend to be more discussion-oriented/seminar-style.
